“I swear to you that this is the most profound thing you’ll hear in your entire life.” “The sound, or the story?” “The sound, or the story? What’s the difference?”
“You understand me? This noise. This goddamn beautiful hiss. It connects.”
Can you hear me? Can you hear me?

Benedict Cumberbatch as Peter Guillam in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

In honour of today’s Twitter conversation about Guillam’s haircut. :’)
I watched this again just now (my movie theatre habit has been curtailed by INABILITY TO WALK, and the DVD doesn’t come out til March so… I downloaded it). It’s not at all confusing the second time around, of course; the scriptwriters were at pains to simplify compared to the book. XD;;
One odd thing I noticed was that you’re practically not given any backstory on the characters, compared to the book - but when I read the book I didn’t feel like I’d been missing any key characterization. I was aware, watching the movie for the first time, that I’d extrapolated everything I needed to know about Esterhase based on casting, last name, accent, and menswear quirks; but apparently, that was what I’d done for everybody. The costume design should really have been nominated for an Oscar, it carries so much of the weight. XD

^ THIS. I loved how the period wasn’t too in-your-face, how the Circus’ suits were all worn-in and soft-looking but had expressive details, and how Guillam had a shiny pocket square to match his shiny tie.

“Seen a lot of injuries then? Violent deaths?”“Hmm, yes.”“Bit of trouble too, I’ve heard.”“Of course. Yes. Enough for a lifetime. Far too much.”“…Wanna see some more?”“Oh God, yes.”
“Shut up! Everybody, shut up! Don’t move, don’t speak, don’t breathe! I’m trying to think. Anderson, face the other way, you’re putting me off.”
“Since yesterday you’ve moved in with him and now you’re solving crimes together. Might we expect a happy announcement by the end of the week?”
