FLORENCE & THE MACHINE // “SHAKE IT OUT”
The proper first single off Ceremonials just leaked.
I might be bleeding out of excitement.
THIS SONG IS A LIFE/GAME/WORLD-CHANGER.
Late to the party, but… new F+tM, hello!
Someone asked me a question about Reese & Vica’s song, Mischief and Bandit. FINALLY AN EXCUSE TO EXPLAIN WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT TO THE WORLD!
HER QUESTION:
AWWW thank you so much! :D You know. I’m glad you asked that question. Mischief and Bandit is one of my favorite songs we’ve written so far - granted we wrote it in a few minutes too!
It’s very random really, and we wrote it for no reason, but the song is about thieves breaking into houses and all the tension, the nervousness, the calculated steps, the evil scheming that is involved in the act. The line that we repeat at the end of the song would be: Destroy, destroy the evidence - and I think that sums up the entire theme right there :))
SO, LYRICS!! So you can sing along!
VERSE 1:
We are breaking into the night
Don’t speak now
We’re turning all our wrongs to right
They won’t have anything to see,
Anything to say
Before morning comes, finish it quickly
Pass me the locks
Careful, don’t get caught
No time to hesitate now
We’re standing under rocks, we’re stumbling
PRE CHORUS:
Don’t think (don’t think)
We’re off the hook just yet
Don’t blink - make sure the coast is clear
We’re on the brink
The break of dawn
Pick up the pace, get it done
Before the headlights come on
CHORUS:
Faster, faster now
Grab everything you can
Faster, faster now
Let’s beat the alarm
Let’s beat the wah-ah, ah-ah-ah, ah-ah
Let’s beat the alarm
Let’s beat the wah-ah, ah-ah-ah, ah-ah
Let’s beat the alarm
VERSE II:
We are sneaking in
In the night
The moon’s gone hiding in the clouds
We’re sly like foxes, digging through boxes
Before sun comes up, finish it quickly
Hand me the loot
We just hit it big
No time to celebrate now
We’re standing under rocks, we’re stumbling
PRE CHORUS
CHORUS
BRIDGE:
Destroy, destroy the evidence (repeat)
One of my favorites by them, maybe because I like their sound best when it’s perky like this? Idek.

The National - Terrible Love (Alternate Version)
Basically, the best album in 2010 is The National’s High Violet. There is no contest, IT OWNS MY SOUL (+ I actually like it better than Boxer). I mean, IT’S A TERRIBLE LOVE AND I’M WALKING WITH SPIDERS. More importantly, why did nobody tell me about the extended version they released last month, I just found out yesterday night and BRB SHAKING AND CRYING
Teresa Teng - The Moon Represents My Heart
When I was a kid, I’d listen to stuff like this all the time and think it was weird and schmaltzy. It is pretty schmaltzy, but I really quite enjoy it now
My personal favorite was “你怎麽说” because I was secretly into songs about unrequited love and feeling insignificant and forgotten, ohnoes (IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT ME/MY CHILDHOOD, LOL)! And the one my father always made me listen to was the Fookien version of “賣肉粽” because of the ~moral lessons~.

Q: The physical motion of your hands in Antebellum brilliantly parallels the song’s story about a compromising relationship. Did you inform any other songs that way? (I can hear the train that u rode on while u wrote Decade & One, right?).
A: You have no idea how happy this question makes me. I don’t always work different elements of a song into the meaning like that, but when I do, it’s so gratifying when someone notices.
The other instances I can think of, off the top of my head, are Pontchartrain (black keys in one hand, white keys in the other) and Between (the 3-measure phrases, waltz meter, 3 verses and 3-part harmony were totally deliberate).
I wasn’t literally riding a train when I wrote Decade and One, but it’s actually meant to evoke a train of thought…so nice work.

SERIOUSLY, THIS WOMAN, DO YOU WONDER WHY ADORE HER
WIP: Recessional piano solo (Vienna Teng)
WIP FOREVER. Supposed to be working on figuring out the accompaniment, but I think we’ve established that I tend to give up when things get hard, lol.
Vienna Teng “Stray Italian Greyhound” (Live)
HEARTS IN MY EYES. GIANT PINK GLITTERY HEARTS. ~*Alex Wong the one-man band*~
Tori Amos “Famous Blue Raincoat”(live)
I really love this version of the song. I realize this borders on blasphemous because Leonard Cohen is… well, Leonard Cohen… and you know how I feel about the Final Fantasy remix of Your Ex-Lover Is Dead with its very pretty but completely irrelevant piano waltzes that are more indulgence and misunderstanding than artistic interpretation? YEAH. But IDEK, I love this - obviously yes, no match for the original, etc etc, but I’m really not compelled to make comparisons - I find it gorgeous and fragile and I wish there were a transcription for this (not that I have the powers to learn, it would just be nice to stare at, lol).
